In Education Week
March 2-6, 2009
NIE Journalism & Design an Ad Contests
Registration for All Contests: October 13, 2008; All Entries Due: December
1, 2008
NIE offers
Journalism and Design an Ad contests to local school students in grades K-12.
This is an excellent opportunity for educators to encourage students to think
independently, write creatively and constructively, and meet academic standards.
We receive
thousands of entries each year and have a dedicated group of educator/professionals
from the Lancaster-Lebanon Reading Council who volunteer their time to read
entries. All entries meeting NIE activity guidelines are read,
and the final entries proceed to the next level of the competition.
The winning
entries are published (March 3, 2009) in a tab that is circulated in Lancaster
Newspapers (Intelligencer Journal and Lancaster New Era) and are available
to schools by completing an online NIE
Week Tabloid Order Form.
To enter
students in these contests, each teacher must complete an Online
Teacher Registration Form for his or her class(es). Please follow the directions below:
- Complete
the Online Teacher Registration Form and submit. (Print out a copy for records)
- Upon
receipt of a LNP registration confirmation email, you and your students

Teachers...
Here are some suggestions for helping your students prepare their entries for
the Newspaper in Education Week Journalism Contests:
- A good instructional
strategy is to have students examine stories and editorials in the newspaper.
Bring in several examples from different newspapers. The editorial staffs
of the Intelligencer Journal, the Lancaster New Era, and the Sunday News
are separate and independent, so examples are available from all three newspapers.
- Please have students
follow the appropriate format, especially in the News Feature and Editorial
categories.
- Please be sure computer
printouts are dark enough to read.
